One of the many benefits of obtaining Australian Permanent Residency (PR) is the freedom to travel in and out of Australia. However, there are important considerations to keep in mind to ensure you maintain your PR status and avoid any unexpected problems.

Here's what you need to know about travelling outside Australia with PR:

  1. Initial Travel Allowance: With your initial PR grant, you're permitted to travel outside Australia for up to five years without any restrictions. This means you can explore the world, visit family and friends without worrying about your PR status.

  1. Resident Return Visa (RRV): Once the initial five-year period finishes, if you have not become an Australian citizen, you'll need to apply for a Resident Return Visa (RRV) if you plan to travel outside Australia and return as a permanent resident. The RRV (subclass 155) allows you to maintain your PR status and re-enter Australia freely. It will usually be granted for 1 or 5 years. So if you do not become an Australian citizen you will need to apply again and repeat the process next time you want to leave and re-enter Australia.

  1. Timing Is Key: It's crucial to apply for the RRV before you travel, as leaving Australia without a valid RRV could jeopardize your PR status.

  1. Be Mindful of Time Spent Abroad: While the RRV allows flexibility in traveling outside Australia, it's essential to be mindful of the time spent abroad. Excessive time spent outside Australia may impact your eligibility for your next RRV, potentially leading to difficulties in re-entering the country as a permanent resident.

In summary, while having Australian Permanent Residency opens up opportunities for travel and exploration, it's essential to follow visa requirements and timelines to maintain your PR status effectively. By staying informed and planning ahead, you can navigate the complexities of travel and immigration with confidence. Once you get your Australian citizenship, you can freely travel and live overseas.
