Are you an Aussie Permanent Resident (PR) visa holder who left Australia after receiving your PR, only to find yourself in a panic about potentially losing it? The information below will help guide you through the process of reclaiming your PR status.

Let's break it down step by step:

  1. Understand the 5-Year Travel Limit: Your initial PR grant allows you to travel in and out of Australia for up to five years. However, if you travel outside Australia after this time limit without obtaining a Resident Return Visa (RRV), you will lose your PR status.

  2. Apply for a Resident Return Visa (RRV): The good news is that even if you're currently outside Australia, you can still apply for an RRV (subclass 155) to regain your PR. This visa allows you return to Australia as a permanent resident and continue living and working in Australia.

  3. Meet the Residency Requirement: One important requirement for the RRV is that you've spent at least two years in Australia with a permanent residence visa within the five years before your application. These two years do not need to be consecutive/in a row.

  4. Exceptional Circumstances: If you haven't met the two-year residency requirement, don't lose hope just yet. You can still qualify for an RRV by proving that you have substantial business, cultural, employment, or personal ties with Australia that are of benefit to the country. In this case it's essential to gather strong evidence and documentation to support your case.
